Just past the bustling city of Asheville, North Carolina, sits the small town of Morganton. Each year on the first weekend in March, one of Gospel music’s favorite families gathers there for a special tradition the Whisnants’ annual Homecoming. This year’s celebration, held March 6–7 at Mount Home Baptist Church, featured three memorable concerts filled with worship, laughter, and heartfelt moments.
For Jeff and Susan Whisnant, the event has long been a highlight of the year. What began as a special gathering with friends and supporters has grown into a true family affair. Not only do fans travel from near and far to attend, but the Whisnants’ extended family also fills the front rows. One of the sweetest sights each year is seeing the couple’s grandchildren sitting eagerly near the stage, cheering on their family and occasionally joining in on a song.
Friday night began with an exciting kickoff as the Whisnants opened the evening with fan favorites such as “Been Blessed,” immediately setting the tone for a joyful night of music and worship. The family welcomed longtime friend Mark Trammell to the stage, whose signature quartet style continues to resonate with audiences everywhere. His powerful rendition of “The King Is Coming” had the congregation on its feet in worship.
Karen Peck and New River followed, bringing both fresh songs from their latest project and beloved classics, including the timeless “Four Days Late.” Their set served as a reminder of the hope found in the Gospel and encouraged listeners to keep their eyes fixed on their heavenly home.
One of the most anticipated appearances of the night came from Gospel music legends, The Inspirations. From the first note, the quartet had the crowd clapping, singing, and worshipping along to the classic songs that have shaped generations of Gospel music fans. The evening concluded in a beautiful moment of unity as all the artists gathered on stage to sing together in a powerful closing song of worship. As attendees left for the evening, excitement was already building for the next day’s events.
Saturday afternoon brought a different but equally meaningful experience as Gerald Wolfe and the Hymn Sing Crew led the congregation in a time of classic hymn worship. The pews of Mount Home Baptist Church were filled, and hands were raised as voices joined together to sing the timeless hymns of the faith. The atmosphere in the room was unmistakable.
“You could feel the Spirit of the Lord in the church,” Jeff Whisnant shared afterward. “It was beautiful and something to be remembered.”
As evening approached, Jeff and Susan once again welcomed a stellar lineup of friends to the stage for the final concert of the weekend. The Erwins opened the evening with their trademark energy, immediately drawing the audience into a lively time of worship.
The Whisnants returned to the stage during the evening to share more of their beloved songs with the crowd, continuing the spirit of celebration that had carried throughout the weekend.
North Carolina natives Jeff and Sheri Easter then brought their signature blend of Southern charm, humor, and heartfelt music to the stage. As Jeff Easter jokingly described it, they “brought the cornbread,” creating a joyful and lighthearted atmosphere that had the audience both laughing and worshipping.
The first half of the concert concluded with Greater Vision, whose rich harmonies and classic songs have long made them a staple in Gospel music. Their performance provided a fitting close to the first portion of the evening.
During intermission, the artists gathered in the lobby to greet fans, sign autographs, and share stories. These moments often become some of the most meaningful parts of the weekend. One particularly touching encounter involved a guest who had recently lost a parent. Several of the artists spent time offering comfort and encouragement, reminding everyone present that the heart of Gospel music is ultimately about sharing hope.
The evening concluded with a deeply moving moment as the artists paused to pray over this individual and reflect together on the many blessings God provides. Led by Jeff and Sheri Easter, all of the artists returned to the stage to sing the beloved song “Thank You Lord for Your Blessings on Me.” It was a fitting close to a weekend centered on faith, friendship, and gratitude.
Each year, the Whisnants’ Homecoming becomes more than just a series of concerts it becomes a gathering of community. Friends reconnect, new friendships are formed, and hearts are encouraged through music and fellowship.
Jeff and Susan extend an open invitation to anyone who would like to experience this special weekend. Next March, the doors of Mount Home Baptist Church will open once again, welcoming guests to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina for another unforgettable time of worship, music, and community.
