For many, many years, the Truthseekers Homecoming was an event that was held in February at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center in Marion, Illinois. The event was three nights, the theater was set on the historic town square and there was not a bad seat in the house. My family went every year and it was truly a highlight of the winter season.
But there was one year that was such a disappointment to me.
Thursday morning dawned…the morning my family was set to pile in the car and drive the four hours across southeast Missouri to be at the opening concert that night. Do you know what I saw when I looked out the window Thursday morning? Nothing but ice. Unexpectedly, an ice storm came through during the night. By the next morning, the trees were bending low, groaning with their heavy load and the driveway transformed into a skating rink. One look and I knew in my heart, we weren’t going anywhere that day.
Now, why am I telling you this story in the middle of winter? I know, it sounds rather depressing, but I promise it has a happy ending! Though the ice storm that came through was unexpected, it wasn’t cold enough outside to keep the ice long. By Friday morning, the roads were clear and more importantly, so was the driveway! We drove up Friday afternoon to the Truthseekers Homecoming and saw two nights of Gospel music.
So this year, while winter is still upon us and you have the opportunity to go out to concerts or events, I encourage you to be like our family all those years ago. Don’t let the cold keep you home. Make plans to go and enjoy Gospel music when it comes to your area. If the weather foils your plans like it did for us, be safe and smart, but don’t let it keep you in the house after the danger has passed. Get out and go see the artists when the roads are clear and the weather settles – I promise you will get a blessing!
(By the way, the Truthseekers Homecoming event is still going strong and the Gospel Music Roadshow will be there this year, March 19-21, 2026. If you don’t have any plans for that weekend, come join us in Marion, Illinois with all of the Truthseekers!)
