In Gospel music, there are staple songs that have carried listeners through many of life’s ups and downs. Rodney Griffin is a name that is no stranger to the songwriting world—a space that brings meaning and fills places and moments where sometimes we cannot find the words ourselves. Rodney’s story does not simply begin and end with songwriting. It is a story written with a dream and a passion for what he does both on and off the road, believing that the big God he serves had even bigger plans for his life.
In this milestone series, we have seen many of our friends in Gospel music share the incredible ways God has moved in their lives, and Rodney is no different. So, let’s journey into his story and see how the God of the universe looked down, saw him, and smiled.
Singing came into Rodney’s life during high school through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Rodney and three other young men formed the Fellowship Quartet. They traveled around their local area and thought, “Wow, we are really something,” Rodney recalls.
After high school, Rodney went to college, earning degrees in Biology and Horticulture while seeking a career path for himself. Throughout that journey, however, he never lost his desire to pursue music and was willing to take any opportunity that came his way.
One day, while paging through The Singing News Magazine, he noticed a group located in his area and decided to give them a call. To his surprise, they were looking for someone to join them full-time.
“Through this simple phone call, I learned not to push on the door. When God wants a door to open, He opens it like a feather,” Rodney says.
Rodney left behind everything he knew, including his executive job before entering the music industry, to pursue music with a group he had simply found in The Singing News Magazine. He didn’t hesitate. He was thrilled for the opportunity to do what he loved and felt called to do. As he puts it, he had finally made it to the bus.
Little did Rodney know that in the fall of 1991, he would meet McCray Dove at the National Quartet Convention and audition for the Dixie Melody Boys. In just nine months, he went from scanning the pages of The Singing News Magazine and praying for God to open a door, to singing on some of the biggest stages in Gospel music.
“What I learned is that I did not open the door myself. When God wants you somewhere, He opens the door from the other side,” Rodney says.
After two years with the Dixie Melody Boys, the opportunity to join Greater Vision came along. It was one of the hardest decisions Rodney ever had to make.
“Both groups were incredibly talented, and I was happy where I was,” he explains.
Looking back now, more than 32 years later, Rodney can clearly see God’s hand in that decision and throughout his journey with Greater Vision.
So, how does a songwriter become a songwriter?
Rodney began simply by writing at his desk during his first job after college at a shipyard. He would write during breaks and whenever he could find the time. As he continued exploring songwriting, he discovered an important truth:
“Great songs are not written—they are rewritten.”
You continue refining what people want to say until the message is clear and meaningful. As Rodney became more involved in Gospel music, groups began to notice his work and eventually started recording his songs. His first song cut was by the Dixie Melody Boys, and after joining Greater Vision, the group recorded many more of his compositions.
As Rodney reflects on his journey in music, he looks back on the many years and many doors God has opened—not by his own merit, but by God’s grace. When asked what advice he would give the next generation of artists and songwriters, his answer is simple:
“Don’t let your relationship with God be put on the back burner by the busyness of singing about Him. We are only as effective singing about Him as we are continuing to experience Him and know Him personally.”
He explains that people in the industry can easily become consumed with schedules, performances, and responsibilities, forgetting all that God has done for them. Before long, that can lead to emptiness because they are simply going through the motions rather than living in a genuine relationship with Christ.
Rodney Griffin is a songwriter, artist, and faithful servant who has allowed God to open each door and has walked faithfully through every one of them. As we continue exploring the milestones of artists throughout Gospel music, one truth remains clear: they did not arrive where they are today by their own efforts alone. They arrived there because God opened the doors, and they faithfully stepped through them.
