Many hear the name Gold City and instantly recognize a quartet that continues to lead the charge in gospel music. What often goes unnoticed are the musicians behind the sound—the steady hands and faithful hearts supporting every song, arrangement, and set list night after night. Among them is pianist Terry Wooten, whose talent, tenacity, and gracious spirit have made him both a fan and industry favorite.
Terry grew up in Alexandria, Alabama, listening to the Gospel Music Caravan on WDJC with Wayne Wallace. That exposure sparked a lifelong love for gospel music. By the age of six, he was playing the piano by ear and soon began formal lessons, laying a foundation that led him to play in his home church and with local groups across Alabama. As his passion grew, Terry joined the group Exodus, touring with them until his audition with Gold City five years ago.
Looking back, Terry sees God’s hand connecting the threads of his journey. Early in his career, he performed alongside Danny, forming a friendship nearly 30 years before his Gold City audition—proof that in this industry, you never know where a relationship may lead.
Since joining Gold City, Terry has embraced every opportunity with humility and gratitude. From performing at The Cove in Asheville, North Carolina, to sharing the stage at the National Quartet Convention and playing at the chapel connected to Arlington Cemetery, he never takes a moment for granted. Even after several years of playing in churches, event centers, and multi-artist events on the road, Terry admits he still feels nervous before stepping on stage. “We are stewards and represent Jesus,” he says. “We’re here to help reach people and share the plan of salvation—and that’s serious work.”
As his first five years with Gold City fly by, Terry looks ahead with anticipation. He’s excited for more road dates with his Gold City brothers, the possibility of an instrumental project, and most of all, the chance to encourage those he meets along the way.
“Five years ago, I never imagined I’d be where I am today,” Terry reflects. “I was 49 when I joined Gold City. It’s proof that it’s never too late to chase the dream God placed in your heart. Keep working. Keep practicing. If God gave you that desire, He’ll see His will fulfilled.”
