Josh Singletary is the pianist and baritone vocalist for Tribute Quartet. Over his 25 year tenure in Gospel music, Josh has released a select number of piano instrumental albums. These albums have been intentional concerning purpose and themes, and we find his latest release, Peace: Instrumental Hymns Volume 1, among that number.

To give a little background on how this instrumental album is unique, we must pause and examine a few terms in frequencies and sound. Before World War Two, all recordings were captured in A432 or 432Hz. After the war, it changed to A440 or 440Hz. So now, when you play a gospel album, all the instruments and vocals are in 440Hz. The change came about when a standard was sought out internationally, and broadcasting favored the brighter sound the 440Hz presented to listeners. However, the 432Hz is considered more harmonically resonant and is considered more relaxing. It’s also called nature’s frequency. The birds sing at 432Hz and if you sing a note acapella, you will naturally sing in the lower tone of the 432Hz.

When Josh Singletary went into the studio to record Peace, he recorded these hymns in the “nature frequency” at 432Hz, instead of the popular 440Hz. So when you listen to any of these eleven tracks, you are not just listening to the songs you know and love, you hear them in a tone known for its smooth and calming nature, much like the truths of the hymns themselves. Whether it’s the opening track of “Wonderful Peace & Living By Faith,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” or “Softly And Tenderly,” these arrangements are bound to remind you of the peace that God brings when resting in his promises. Each track is only piano and flows from one to the other in a complementary way, the beauty and simplicity of each exquisite.

Peace: Instrumental Hymns is an album that is wonderful for winding down at the end of the day, calming anxiety or resting in the sounds of the treasured hymns of the faith. While there are a lot of sounds that enter our minds on a day to day basis, this instrumental album takes us to treasured truths in a natural way that reminds us of God’s faithfulness, rest and grace.
